The Chevy rearends use a "drop out third member", so there are 10 bolts
holding on the ROUND cover, and 10 nuts holding the removable cast iron
center section to the stamped steel "banjo" housing. The C clips hold
in the alxes...you have to remove the bolt on the differential, and pull
out the spider gear pin (which is about 3/4" diameter, and 6" long),
then push in the axles about 1/4", and the C clips will fall out. The
wheel bearings are pressed into the housing.
GMCs (I'm not sure what years?) used a Spicer type rear axle, which has
a "stop sign" shaped cover, with 10 bolts holding it on. The Spicer
rearend has a cast center section that is NOT removeable, and has the
steel axle tubes pressed into it. The Spicer rearend has no C
clips...you have to unbolt the axles and pull them out, by removing the
nuts that hold on the wheel bearing retainers and brake backing plates.
The bearings usually are stuck in the housing, and you need a slide
hammer to pull the axles out. The wheel bearings are pressed onto the
axle shafts.
