Unless I am mis-understanding Joe's directions this will not work.

"place a floor jack under the center of the rearend" (I assume he means
the differential or pumpkin) will still have all the weight on the
springs.

I normally just place a floor jack under the center of the rearend to
relieve pressure on the springs, remove the center bolt on the rear shackle
and then tap the link off of the spring pins. You'll notice out of round
wear on the link "bars" holes or their bent and that constitutes
replacement. The bushing in the ends of the leaf springs will more than
likely need to be replaced due to wear. There are also rubber bushing that
go on the pins of the rear shackles that help seal in the grease and keep
out the dirt and grime from the springs pins.
