Might help with Chevy trucks. Wont help with PorkChop's GMC.
The GMC VIN numbers do not give as much data as Chevy VINs do.
253 8C Y1018 decodes to
1018 ------------> incrementing serial number
Y ----------------> Y = 55 second series, W = 56, T = 57, S = 58
I don't think there was a separate code for
59. Any supposed 59 model I have ever seen
has had an "S" in this position of the serial
number.
C ------------------> C = California plant. P = Pontiac Michigan plant
8 -------------------> 8 cylinder engine. 6 cylinder models have a
blank
character here, not a 6. In 1/2 and 3/4 ton
trucks 8 cylinder engines were basically detuned
Pontiac V8's from the same year. Compression
ratios were lower and Bendix 2 barrel carbs were
used. 55 would have been 288 cubic inches. 56
was
317". 57 was 347" At some point the
bore/stroke
sizes were changed from standard Pontiac sizes
and
the engine became 336 cubic inches. Larger
trucks
(I don't know where the split was) used a
derivation
of the Oldsmobile V8 of the day, either 324 or
370
cubic inches.
253 ---------------------> Model. 101 is short 1/2 ton, 102 is long 1/2
ton, 15x
is 3/4 ton, above that I can't remember.
Sounds to me like this 56 is actually a 55.
