Don,
I looked in my Chevy by the Number, 1965-69 and Chevrolet Small-Block V-8
nterchange Maunals. The only reference I can find to oval ports is on a
big-block. Chevy by the Numbers says "Oval ports were used on low and
medium performance engines. Square ports were used on high performance
engines for better airflow."

Head#3856206 was used on a 396 w/ 325 HP in 1965-66
Head#3872702 was used on 396 (325 and 360 HP) and 427 (390 HP) in 1966
Head#3917215 was used on 396 (325-350 HP) and 427 (390-400 HP..incl.
Corvettes) in 1967-68
Head#3946074 (Aluminum) was used on the Corvette and Camaro 427 in 1969 (430
HP)

I don't know about other year engines. Hope this helps.

Jon
