Having the live starter can be handy.  Once or twice nudging it while 
in gear helped walk my old man's truck out of some really bad mud 
when these were newtrucks.  With the starter only, there wasn't enough 
torque to spin the rear wheels.

Hard on starters and batteries, but it worked.
