The '58 GMC 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton (not Chevy, but I'm pretty sure it is the
same) Master Parts Book shows group # 7.6265, Switch - Directional
Signal as:

part # 897911 as "Standard 3 wire, class A, complete, housing, ring,
wire, etc." for 55-56
part # 897915 as "Class B 6 wire, complete, housing, ring, wire, etc."
for 55-56
part # 897156 as "Class A & B, complete, housing, ring, wire, etc." for
57-58

I know that the "class A" signals require separate turn signal lamps
that were usually mounted on the top of the fenders. These lamps did
NOT include brake lamps. Think of old sholl bus turn signals.

The class B signals incorporated into the brake light circuit.
