  It mostly varies with conditions. Many MIGs (including mine)
have a fixed gas flow, and that seems to work fine.

  However, if welding in windy conditions such as outside, it can
help to flow extra gas to keep the weld area oxygen-free.

  There is a product called "tip dip" that is supposed to do
just that, it's just a pot of goop that you dip into periodically.
Haven't
tried it, never had the problem.

  There are two types, one is photoelectric and one is electronic. The
photoelectric ones are supposed to darken within 1/5000th of a
second and the electronic ones a much faster 1/25000th of a second.

  Both are probably fine.
