The key word here is "stock"! A "stock" 1972 U.S. spec., low-compression
1296 Spitfire engine was listed at a whopping 48hp! It's still a very
nice, willing engine, but not a threat to most challengers. ;-)

A "built" 1500 could easily be putting out around 75hp or perhaps a LOT
MORE, depending on carbs, exhaust, cam, etc., and the torque figures are
likely to be respectably higher as well.

But at what cost? is the next real question? At at what point do you
realize you really need to upgrade tires, wheels, shocks, suspension and
brakes to properly cope with the "built" 1500?

Lots to consider. The "stock" '72 is really a very nice package for what
it is -- just not incredibly quick!
