Andrew and lists,

I have the answer for the timing chain dilemma....

some form of external tensionning must be done - ie holding it fully
compressed while fitting the cover over the nose of the crank. I remember
doing two things:

1, Fit the cover, roughly vertical for now, over the nose of the crank.
Ensure the seal is lubricated. The vertical positioning will allow for

2, make some form of hook shaped tool out of coat hanger, welding rod, or
duct tape (sorry Red Green fans) with a 90 deg bend just long enough to
engauge the tensionner. Pull the tensioner taught with your new factory
tool and with your other hand push the timing cover in as far as it will go
(gentle on the seal). As soon as it is close enough for the chain to hold
the tensionner you can remove your tool (this is where you need the light
duty coat hanger since it may get bent on removal). Now, the crank holds
the base in place and if you have succeeded the cover should want to spring
away from the chain. Simply install one bolt near the top if this is the
case. Now do all the others and call the job complete.

Oh ya, you will get goopy from the silicone you have on the gaskets. I use
Permatex SuperBlue or Ultra Copper on the paper gaskets. If you let the
blue stuff dry it forms a flexible membrane which will seal better than the
paper gasket (use both) and be dry enough not to make a mess. But hey, who
cares, they all start leaking again eventually...

Good luck

Dave Terrick
