If it has reverse gear next to 3rd, It's a "J".
A '76 model will always be a "J" unless someone has fitted the older "3
rail" type transmission to it, in which case it can be either "D" or
"J".
Looking under the car, the "J" type has a rectangular sump plate about
5"x2 1/2", held on by 6 bolts.
