Hi, Atwell here in freeze-dried NJ. :(

Not an engineer, but here are my actual experiences in heating my 16 x 25
garage, insulated, with 12 foot ceilings.

I'm using a 55,000 BTU kerosene jet-heater (with a ceiling fan to mix
things up a bit) and 35 to 70 degrees F takes about 20 minutes. The
heater then stays off for about 3 hours. (Good thing too 'cause I can't
hear the radio when it's on!)

You'll find that the floor is still pretty darn cold even with the air temp
at 70. And of course, the by-product of that heater is moisture, so things
tend to condense on the cold surfaces a bit. A built-in heater with
external exhaust would prevent that, and carbon monoxide concerns.

If you are building, look into some kind of radiant heat for the floor,
you'll be glad you did. (BOY my buns get cold!)

Electric is very expensive to run, isn't it? BTW the kero heater was
suggested by my plumber, who resisted the fistful of money I was going to
throw his way to install hot-water heating from my house.

In my old garage I had tried convection-type kero heaters, and they were
lousy. I made sure to get one with the fan.

Of course, YMMV, being 'way up there in Canada...
