>From my rather rusty and dusty memory, there is a plastic
insulator/detent that the light contacts when it is in the
off position. When the light is moved to the on position,
power is applied to the light and voile, it lights.

There are a couple of ways to fix it. One, you may be able
to gently squeeze the sides together. Two, cut the wire and
put in a switch. Three, replace the light.
