Another 2 cents. I would spend the time to check out what's available
from Vicki Brit and others in heat shield and sound proofing material.
I've gotten a roll from VB and used it in both my 79 and 80 spit
tunnels. Used with the alunimum tape, it seals, cuts out the heat, and
quiets things down considerably. It's also only about 1/2 an inch
thick. Both spits have ABS tunnels installed also. Used some high temp
adhesive spray to fix to tunnels. VB catalog SG-27 (this spring's) page
11, has it listed for 29.95. That roll will do more than 2 tunnels.
Good luck.

I will add my 2 cents here. I used some heater duct insulation on
mine. I got
it at the local home improvement store. It is silver with a bubble wrap
type
material inside. I just taped this to my plastic tunnel cover, and then
put
the carpet back over. While I was at it I took out the fiber pad under
the
footwell carpets and replace those with this material. This has helped
to cut
down heat and noise inside the car. Hope this helps. Chris
