Mine were beat up but useable for several years, and then they
suddenly started getting this almost-opaque brown film on them.
I tried all sorts of polishes and cleaners, but no luck.  I even
tried wet-sanding with 2000-grade paper.

I finally gave up and replaced the top when some seams started splitting...
