Yeah, but the "getting it started" part is the killer.  I knew a guy in
Germany who kept a second battery in his house (and we're talking about
typical Mercedes Diesel batteries here, the ones with the big rope handles)
cause when it got really cold inthe middle of those Nord-Rhein winters he
couldn't get the thing started on the charge in one battery.  (Hmmm. maybe
all he needed were new glow plugs??)
