I rebuilt the engine on my MKIII last summer and every piston was worn like
that.  2 or 3 'holes' on the sides of each piston.  It ran OK though!!!
Still good for 80mph.  Burnt a little oil!!!!!

It makes you wonder how bad it has to get before total failure!!
