I have been avoiding this thread until now because my thoughts up till now have
been stated by others.
However, The full synchro 3-rail (circa MkIV) that I have in My Mk1 also hits
the radio knobs in first gear. The radio I have is a
Clarion AM/FM/ Cassette and has a side to side knob in the center for fast
forward and reverse. CHanging gears with a tape in it often
hits that knob and causes the tape to have fits.
It could be that the early 3-rail gearboxes without the synchro in first and
being shorter sit further back than the later full synchro
ones. THere is about 1/2 inch difference in the length and the additional 1/2
inch happens to be for2ward of the shift lever. So that
may explain it.
One remedy for this may be to find an unused GT6 shifter and use it. Those are
shorter and have the exact attaching points as the
3-rail ones.
