My Spit did that just after a carb rebuild - what I found was a chunk of
gasket material in the bottom of the carb needle 'tube', where the fuel gets
drawn up out of the float bowl. The engine would hit a certain RPM, and
stay there. Also worth checking, if you still have a mechanical fuel pump,
is if a piece of debris from the tank has blocked flow or held one of the
pump's 1-way valves open. I found that once, after chasing ignition
problems for days... Finally, if the coil is weak, you just can't get the
engine to run - I run a 45,000 volt Accel race coil to be on the safe side.
