If you bypass the inhibitor switch and want to make sure that it does not work
in reverse you could always wire a relay in to it actuated from the reverse
lights switch. You would need to work out the correct circuitry ( should simply
be a spur off the reverse switch to the relay)and type of relay (normally open
or normally closed - I suspect the latter). Maybe someone else has already done
this and can tell what make of relay to get.

Dean --

Be wary of bypassing the inhibitor switch; if the overdrive should
somehow be engaged while you reverse the car, you will destroy the
overdrive.

Check all electrical connections, and test all wires for continuity.
Some of them are no doubt very old and brittle -- and possibly broken!

My inhibitor switch has the "tab" connections for the wire connectors
just sort of riveted on, and they were somewhat loose with age; I
soldered the area for the connections to work more reliably.

Also check oil level in the transmission.

HTH.
