There are 36 items that are checked (on the back of the Ontario Ministry of
Transportation certificate).  Unless you have body holes that you want to
disguise before a mechanic sees them, I would advise taking to a local shop
for an inspection.  Before the inspection, tell them you are going to any
work yourself.  My experience is that they will be less inclined to "find"
work for themselves.   They will charge you only once for the inspection (I
just paid 40.00 before taxes) this usually presumes that you get the work
done and have them inspect your repairs within a few weeks.

Brakes, steering, suspension, tires, and body holes are biggies... sagging
door hinges....  They will care about most things but the engine and stereo.
Check mirrors, glass, reflectors, wipers, defroster, speedo, headlight aim,
fuel and exhaust system and seat belts. I think that covers it.
