My personal recommendation is go make friends with the guys at the local
auto paint store.  There are a thousand theories on painting.  Most of the
theories are great (beware of recommendations for chicken bones), just very
different.  I have found that books tend to support their way of doing it
while people will tell you several ways.

Would anyone have a book or website to recommend to learn basic
bodywork from? I have some areas on my 74 Spitfire that the previous
owner touched up with a brush. I'd like to get my car repainted before
cooler weather sets in to minimize rust. To keep the cost down I'd
like to do as much of the prep work as possible myself.
