With modern cars running things as light as ATF in their transmissions
and differentials, and back dating recommendations for lighter oils, I
find myself seriously pondering using something other then the molases
that a Spitfire normally calls for. As weak as the Spitfire engine is,
gaining a few hoursepower by reducing drivetrain drag would be a
significant percentage gain.

ATF would probably do fine in the transmission. It works well in many
other manual transmissions, so the average synchro seems able to handle
it. Ford makes a nice tractor lubricant known as 134 that should work
in the transmission and the rear end. Then there is the Redline
synthetic product lineup.

Have any of you any experience in running alternative gearbox and
differential lubricants?
