I need the wisdom of the lists:
I have a 76 Spitfire 1500 that is running on the hot side. The gauge has
reading 3/4 to 7/8 for the last month & a half. I replaced the temp
sending unit last fall so I am relatively sure the reading is correct.
I have had the timing advanced some to smooth out the engine since last
fall, but after a suggestion from someone, I set it back to 2 deg ATDC,
which it ran very rough, so I set it at 0. On the way to work this
morning in 70 degree temps, it heated up within the first 5 miles at 40
mph to 7/8 and it lost power and started to backfire. I slowed down and
it smoothed out. This continued for the next 10 miles to work.
On the way home, the same thing, so I stopped and advanced the timing a
bit and took off again. Better, but it did backfire and lose power a few
times. At home, I advanced the timing some more and took it out for a
drive. It ran smooth and no backfiring, but the temp rose again just as
fast.
Tonight I drained the radiator, flushed the cooling system, replaced
both upper and lower hoses and installed a new 160 deg. thermostat. I
filled the radiator with cool water and started the engine with the
choke out to run at a high idle. Within five minutes the temp was up at
3/4 and holding. The radiator was too hot to touch.

This has been my daily driver since March. I have pressure sprayed the
radiator fins to remove bugs and grime.

Anyone have any ideas? Can the water pump be bad without it leaking or
squealing?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Howard Baugues
