Right on Vic!
Bead/shot blasting is the way to go.
Consider powdercoat for the cosmetic finish. There are
a world of colors/finishes to choose from, including
shiny chrome.
(may also decrease the chance of stress fractures
developinf on the surface from scratches, etc.)
