Gearbox Evaluation

I'm still not sure if I'm going to opt for
the 5 speed conversion by TSI or use the
original gearbox in my 73 GT6. If I do use
the original is there any way to check it to
see if it needs a rebuild? The car didn't run
when I bought it; so I don't know the condition
of the gearbox. The input shaft does have some
wobble in it. What are the weak points of the
gearbox? Thanks!
