My guess is then that one of the gauges is -ve earth and one +ve.  If I were
in your position, I'd be seriously looking at converting the car to
negative.  It's a reasonably tricky job, but the MkI has such a simple
circuit anyway, you'll be getting off fairly lightly and then you'll be able
to use off-the-shelf parts and you won't have garages cocking things up
through ignorance.

But yeah, it wouldn't be high on the list of things to fix.
