Mark,
I ground flats onto the threaded end of an old oversized bolt - I don't know
the size but it was short (1inch or so) and fat. The flats are about 3/8"
but actually have a slight taper which is easy to achieve with grinding
wheel or file.
Bolt fits into the drain plug and is then turned with a standard spanner.
