Greetings,
I'm seeking any tips from those who have assembled an A-series or two
as I've just got mine back the shop ready to go back together...I trust.
It's the 1098 that you may remember consumed #2 big end bearing on a trip 3
weeks ago.
The crank has been ground to accept .040" oversize conrod bearings as the
grinder says they were a touch off centre to start, necessitating removal of
a fair bit of metal.
He asked me to do a "dummy" rebuild to see if the pistons protrude from the
block at top dead centre(center) ;) and to check (a couple of) the crank
bearing clearances with a few bits of flexiguage.
results were:
centre main bearing: 1.75~2.0 thou.
#2 and #4 conrod bearings both 1 thou.
pistons 2&3 stick out about 10 thou from the top surface of the block,
so I expect that if he 'centered' the journals 1&4 should too (will check
that shortly)
This is the first motor i've built ground up and I'm currently without a
workshop manual..
....Question time.
Should I use gasket sealant/cement on oil joints such as the oil filter
connections?
Should those clearances and the piston protrusion situation worry me?
Can I trust just loctite on all the bearing studs (no locktabs)?
I'm chomping at the bit to get it together but I want to do it right...fools
rush in etc.
Any tips, opinions concerned or casual, and advice is appreciated.
Andy
