If you read the screed I just sent in about modern vs old lubes, this one will
sound familiar.

I use a good quality synthetic grease in my trunnions, and haven't had any
problems. I cleaned them thoroughly when I disassembled, and I keep them
"topped up". I have run a side by side test on one car - oil in the left,
grease in the right. No noticeable difference after three years.

I believe the oil vs grease distinction was important in "the old days" when
grease had a tendency to harden and separate after a short while (take a look
inside your wiper motor if you don't know what I mean!). That just isn't the
case any more, and I feel perfectly comfortable (and much cleaner) using grease
in my trunnions. You could, too.
