   I agree with Tom Gentry's response except for the "scrap it" part.  If the 
pitting is small, or there is light scoring, you can hone the cylinder using 
400 
grit and 600 grit crocus cloth (metal sandpaper) and get very good results.  If 
the scoring is severe, you can have brass sleeves put in by Apple Hydraulics 
(address on the SOL server) for less than $225.00!

   If you are having slipping in reverse, you may have severe wear on the 
reverse teeth on the cluster gear... very expensive to replace if you can find 
one and the idler gear.  You may have to replace both, which will likely cost 
as 
much on parts as a rebuilt transmission when you add in the synchronizers.
   In a previous life, I had a tranny on my '74 Spitfire with this same 
problem. 
I would hold it in gear as it tried to jump out of gear until it reached a 
point 
that it would not engage at all.  When I opened up the transmission, the 
cluster 
gear reverse teeth were chipped off in one quadrant and the idler gear had 
severe wear on the edges.  I continued to drive it as a "forward only, pull 
through parking spaces only" car until one day the reverse idler gear lever 
broke off and embedded itself between third gear and reverse locking up the 
drive train. (Stopped the car in less than 30 feet from 40 mph!)  If you have 
tried to force the transmission to stay in gear while it attempts to jump out, 
you may have the same "time bomb".  A rebuild or replacement is in order.
