The block and head is basically the same. A late 2 litre with dome pistons
is exactly the same block and head. I've converted one, and it was
quite easy.

The conrods are the same, you really only have to change the
crank and pistons. And the harmonic damper - don't forget that. It is
really important. The 2.5 litre also has a duplex chain for the cam
drive, that is probably a good idea. The carbs are different also, obviously.

The difference in power between the two with the standard camshaft and
carbs will not be mind boggling, but the 2.5 definitely has more
low-end torque.

If you want the free-world(*) TR5 performance (150bhp, 140+ net), then
you need a TR-5 camshaft, Lucas injection and a higher compression
(10:1).

Notice that the 2 litre is a better reving and not so fragile engine.
You might be better off tuning that instead of going to 2.5.

Was the GT6 ever produced with the Herald swing axle? In that case,
I'd be a bit careful about putting in 150 bhp. Regardless, uprated
dampers, springs, wheels and brakes is probably called for. And do
check that everything is A OK in terms of wear.

You might want to have a look at:

(*) Sorry, couldn't resist. The recent thread on planned car confiscation
in New Jersey really made me wonder. It frankly sounded like
something that could only have happened in a totalitarian
    regime.
