Hi all
New kid on the list: Pete Fullam pwf@fullam.com 63TR4 (CT19207L)
Background stuff: Original owner, 172,000 mi, good & bad times and war
stories you wouldn't believe. Now this:
A while back I put in a new set of 87mm pistons & liners. When it
was all done & running, the first compression check ran 115-120PSI. (The
valves were done at the same time) OK, the rings have to seat. Cut to the
present, 5500 miles later. The compression is all the way up to 130-132PSI.
This, by the way, is with a 278 degree Isky cam and 0.080" off the head. I
figure the compression should be at least in the 180s. Other clues: a gale
out of the crankcase breather (it blows a quart in about 300 miles on a
turnpike), oil mist all over the bottom of the car, no blue smoke, no oil
fouling of the plugs and the oil gets dirty pretty fast. How long should it
take AE/Hepolite rings to seat?
Another TR3 or 4 owner in the area reportedly has the same problem,
at about 3500 miles.
