I this car hasn't been driven for a time and has fuel problems
make your life easier, prepare ahead:
1. buy a "foot" pump at Pep boys for $6.95, it allows you to plug
it into the fuel tube at the fuel pump. A couple of quick punches
and it will build enough pressure to disloged junk in the line
(usually 12" forward of the tank). DO NOT USE an electric pump
anywhere near gas, the air flows around the armature, so its acts
like a bomb. Pump is good for brake calipers as well. You'll
need a plastic adapter, i.e. the hollow shaft from a cheap ink pen.
2. buy 6 fuel filters and change them every month
3. attach a 3 ft piece of tubing between the line and fuel pump,
put the filter in the middle, lower it to prime the line, i.e.
start the car, then place it behind the brake servo.
This allows you to disconnect the line for filter change/pump
usage while holding it ABOVE fuel tank level, i.e. no gas all
over everything.
4. Take a 10 ft piece of 5/16" fuel tubing and duck jaw vise grips.
use the small duck jaw vice grips to seal the clogged line to the
tank (rubber portion). Run the rubber hose into the gas
tank filler tube, around the rear window, right window into
popped hood. You can drive it home this way.
5. Pull the gas tank and have it boiled, only certain radiator shops
will do this. I use 1-4 even after the tank is boiled for a few
months till its all cleaned.
