Just went through the same dilema.  Mine were and are exactly as you
described without anything actually holding the shoes to the backing
plate.  The post/rubber (? - might be felt) holds them away but all that
is keeping them in is the drum itself.   If you find that there should be
springs/clips/whatever, let me know...
