I've removed the camshaft with engine in-situ recently, but what the   
manuals don't mention is that the front grille ( a fixed, not removable   
bit of it) may get in the way when you try to draw it out. My solution to   
this was to put a jack under the engine, loosen up the two engine mounts   
and then give it enough of a lift to get over the interfering part of the   
grille. Use your judgement on this - I don't know how far you can go   
without doing some damage, but if yours is like mine it's only a small   
amount of lift needed.

You will of course have to remove the cam lifters first, and DO be very   
careful when pulling out the camshaft not to allow it to hit too hard on   
the bearing surfaces. This is hard to do for the first few inches as   
you've only got the end of the shaft to get a hold of. I used a vice grip   
on the nose of the shaft to get some leverage.
