The Spitfire horn is grounded thru the steering column shaft. The
important points to check are:
1) The steering rack has a ground wire. Is it intact?
2) The steering column flex joint has rubber rings which would cut off
the ground. This was overcome by a wire which connects the bottom 1/2 of
the joint to the top 1/2. It is part of the coupling. Is it intact?
I'd advise starting at the top and working down. Pull the steering wheel
and see if there is 12 volts between the steering column shaft and the
hot supply to the horn. If not, is it lack of ground or power. If lack of
ground, move down to the steering rack. Is it grounded? How about the
shaft above the coupler? If you lack power, proceed in the other
direction. This should narrow down the problem area. By the way, don't
forget to check the horn brush and (if fitted) the horn relay as they are
the moving/wearing parts in the system. Good luck.
