I have about 800 miles on a fresh engine rebuild and am still exibiting
some startup smoke. I spoke to the mech. the other day and he gave me some
line about this engine ('66 Spit MKII, 1147cc) not having valve seals and
that some puff might be normal in this engine. Is this true?
Thoughts?

Eric - FWIW, I have about 1200 miles on a complete 1147 rebuild in a Mk l
Spit and have had no smoke at all. Your mechanic's comment is correct and
actually seems reasonable and I'd probably reach the same conclusion if the
smoke does not dissapate within another 1000 miles or so.
