Note that "98 octane" gas of the period is not the same as 98 octane
would be today. There are two different methods for measuring octane -
"Research" and "Motor". The octane advertised on
today's pumps is an average of the two numbers, so it will always
be lower than what the manuals ask for (probably the higher,
research, number). More than anyone cares to know about

9:1 CR isn't that high. If you're friend's MGC isn't pinging on 92 pump
gas, he should just leave it alone. If it's pinging a little, he
can retard the timing and save his money.
