...and British Frame and Engine.  Yes, I've done it to both my TR-3A
and my TR-4.  ALmost all the racers that I know of have done this to
their cranks.

That is correct - the scroll at the rear of the crank needs to be
machined off to give a smooth surface for the lip seal to seal against.

I think so.

Nothing is completely leak free, but this is as leak free as a modern car.
I have voted with my money (three times now), so I guess I think its worth 
the expense.
