Eric,
There are all different kinds of zirk fittings available from your local auto
parts guy.  My U-Joints ('80 Spit) came with zirks of about 1-1/2" in length.
During normal operation, I kept a set screw in the hole, because of the close
clearance -- putting the zirk in when servicing the joint.  The "spider" side of
the joint (where the zirk is) should have been installed facing the shaft and
not the differential.  If you installed them facing the differential....me
thinks you got a problem. :-(
