I am rather new to the OD experience, and my experience is with the A not
the J type, but yes the OD could engage itself upon proper failure. If your
still ok going forward check your RPM to speed ratios from the book and see
if the match up correctly.

Don't have Haynes so can't help there.  There are springs between the OD and
the main tranny, but on the A type they are not so big as to require as to
require a press. I doubt that they are on the J.

He reported no trouble with going backwards until today.

Could the overdrive have suddenly engaged?

Is overhaul, or at least inspection, of the overdrive covered in the haynes
manual? I read somewhere in the archives that it is full of big springs and
should be taken apart in a press, presumably to stop them flying everwhere
when the last bolt pulls the last turn of thread?
