Whoa! I did this two or three times last winter in the process of
putting the valve train back together after a head rebuild. Now I feel
lucky I got off scott free.
Basically I fully loosened all the rocker adjustments and turned the
fan until the rods were equally extended on one cylinder, just as one
finished heading up and before the other started down. I roughly adjusted
those rockers and moved the fan half way round. Then I did the next
cylinder in the firing order and continued in that fashion 'till all were
done. This is a variation on the way I adjust the valves with the head
already in place.
All I can say is that I had worked out a fairly reliable sense of the
relationship between the piston position and the push rod extensions - and
such visualization is not my strong suit. The point is that most of the
written advice on this topic didn't work for me and I had to sort it out
for myself.
