Bill,
Even before the MK II Spit, Triumph had changed the breather on th 1147
engine. My Mk I Spit with original engine and fittings has no opening in
the block for a breather. Instead there is a metal tube out the right side
of the valve cover. On the MKI it is connected by rubber hose to a "Y" that
then connects by hoses to the front of the individual "wire gauze" air
cleaners. On MkII Spits there is an air cleaner box holding paper element
air cleaners. The engine side of this box has a tube to connect the breather
to. In either case, the crankcase vapors get routed back through the carbs
and are burnt. I'd make some sort of blanking plate to cover the old
breather hole and get a MK I or MK II Spit Valve cover that has the breather
pipe. Connect the breather to whatever style air cleaner you install. If
you are using an aftermarket air cleaner without the correct breather
fittings you could probably install the valve cover backwards with the
breather facing away from the manifolds and run an appropriate sized heater
hose off of the breather down to the lower edge of the frame of the car.
This would vent the vapors to the road as was done on the early cars.
Hope this helps,
Dan
