No offense, but your friend didn't fire up the car, you did. A rich mixture on
the carbs will cause this the catalytic converter to get red hot. Mix fuel and
air in the presence of the platinum catalyst, and you get combustion. You're
burning excess fuel in the catalytic converters, and from the sound of it, the
mixture is way too rich.

This will happen on any catalyst equipped car with a rich mixture, not just a
TR8.

Besides, it was the TR7 that got the bad rap, not the TR8.
