Dennis,

The mainshaft circlip should be replaced every time. If you
manage to get it off without breaking it... it will be out of
shape and weakened.

It can be installed much easier than removed by using a PVC or
metal pipe tube to coax it down the shaft after it is started on
the end of the shaft. Another lister had a great idea about
filing a notch in the ends to let a proper circlip tool catch
hold.

I just dismantled the "orphan" gearbox that came with my recent
OD discovery. For many reasons, it appears to be a "calico cat"
collection of parts built up by a racer. I found that although
there were many good fresh parts in the unit... the circlip was
reused and misshapen so that it only really caught in the slot on
one side and snapped as soon has I started prying on it.

I plan to mate my recently rebuilt gearbox in the car with the
A-type OD I am working on. I must swap the short mainshaft from
the "orphan" to my good rebuilt gearbox. I have ordered 2 spare
circlips for the reassembly work. They are the cheapest part of
the parts list and should never be re-used.

Hmmm, says I. The circlip has been one of the consistent
suspects in the TR6 transmission I'm having problems with. If
I'm not mistaken, it has been pulverized every time the box
has been opened up (most likely due to it hopping out and being
chewed up in the gears). Isn't this circlip supposed to be in-
stalled with a specific Churchill tool (Either S176 or S167A -
my Bentley manual seems to be confused about which is right)?
Could bending the circlip (with circlip pliers) during the
course of installation cause it to fail prematurely? Thanks
for any and all info.
