I'd like to express my thanks to Ross, Michael, Terry, Bob, and erl in
Virginia for all the suggestions in my battle of the u-joints. After
putting the bearing cups in the freezer and heating the flange, I got
the first 2 cups and the yoke to go in, with the help of a monstrous
clamp and the vise. The other 2 cups and yoke for the shaft flange
proved to me that this can be a bear of a task. In this case, the bear
won. The cups ended up going in a tad too far, binding up the movement
and simply would not come back out, even enough to loosen things up. A
couple minutes and thousands of degrees later the melted blobs of
smoldering metal fell out. I then put the torch away and called a shop
to have the u-joints replaced. I hate to admit defeat, but this time I
lost the battle. However, there is still lots to do, with the motor
rebuild in progress, and I shall ever so gallantly march forward until
the task is completed.
