Just attempted to repack the rear wheel bearings on my '64 TR4. When I
pulled the drums off, there was grease slung all over the place. Unbolted the
six bolts that retain the axel assembly to the axel housing. Was able to
press the axel out of the keyed taper fit of the hub. Replaced seals, cleaned
bearing and race, repacked the tapered roller bearing and began to
reassemble. When the whole assembly was back in the axel housing, there was
more than 1/8" end play in the axel (after the castellated nut was tightened
to the appropriate torque).
There is a collar on the axel that the bearing is pressed up against. I
did not remove the bearing. Is it possible that the DPO changed the bearings
and did not press the retainer on far enough, resulting in the excessive end
play? The manual says it should have .004 to .006 end play. I reassembled it
with the same shims that were in it when I took it apart. What to do?
