These last 2 - 3 weeks I must have received at least 100 messages infected
with the 2 viruses currently pandemic. Just like the relief you feel when
you read of an accident somewhere else, I am smiling from one ear to the
other just now because I have a mac, and can neither be infected by nor
spread these to others. These two latest viruses don't according to my
readings do any damage directly, the mayhem they create is simply due to
the physical number of messages flying through the ether and literally
jamming servers nationwide with messages. Now, I haven't kept count, but I
have the feeling that the number of postings I've received from this list
recently just discussing the viruses has about been the same as the number
of infected postings I have been getting, so that all adds to the mayhem
too. Plus the bad blood from people unfairly accusing each other of sending
off infected mails to each other, considering the fact that the infected
post can come from someone you know and look pretty innocent. All in all, a
really successful virus, the author of it must be in seventh heaven.

Now here's something to raise a few eyebrows! On 27. november I installed
some firewall software, not that macs are vulnerable to hacking either, but
better safe than sorry I thought. Since that day, about 10 days maybe, the
software has recorded exactly 25 attempts to get into my machine - 2 from
China, 3 from Panama, 2 from Taiwan, 1 from Slovenia, 14 (yepp) from
Mexico, 1 from Chile and 2 from the USA!!!! Now whether these people had
malicious intentions I don't know, but these were all deliberate attempts
to probe openings in my machine. All denied by the software. The lesson -
ignorance is bliss, protection is even better.

Considering that Norton and other brand antivirus and firewall software
must be among the cheapest software on the market today, there's just no
excuse for not having this stuff on your machine, and remember to download
the new virus definitions file that comes out at least once monthly. Then
you can just sit back and laugh at all this stuff (for them most part
anyway) and it all becomes pretty much a non-issue.

Cheers,
Dave
