Thanks to all who offered comments.  Yes, after a conversation with the PO it
is evident that it was "converted" to negative ground using the brute force
method.  It is now back to + earth using a kinder, gentler approach.

This was the nice surprise... once back to + earth the radio worked just fine.

As I was giving the car a thorough going-over I opened the ashtray and found an
old  cigarette butt in there.  Checked the brand... it was a "Triumph"!   I put
it back.
