Given the small (and high impedance) output of the O2 sensor, it's best to
run a signal ground directly from the sensor to the meter.  Otherwise your
measurement can be thrown off by "ground loop", ie voltage drops (due to
charging current or whatever) between the manifold and whatever the meter is
using as a ground reference.  On "two wire" sensors, that's what the second
wire is.  If memory serves, the O2 sensor output is always positive,
regardless of what ground polarity your car is.  BTW, a DVM will serve as a
substitute meter, although it's not exactly easy to read while driving <g>
However an ordinary analog meter will not work, the O2 sensor doesn't have
enough output to drive even a sensitive voltmeter.
